Scan-to-Earn: How QR Codes Turn Every Product Into a Loyalty Touchpoint

10 Aug 2026 · 5 min read

Most loyalty programs only reward a customer if a staff member remembers to enroll them at the counter. Scan-to-earn flips that — the reward is printed directly on the product, so enrollment happens the moment a customer picks up the item and scans it, with no staff involvement required at all.

How it works

A merchant creates a "scan & earn" product in their dashboard — a name and how many points it should award per scan — then generates a batch of unique QR codes for it, one per physical unit. Each code is a genuinely distinct string, not a shared code copy-pasted across every bottle or box, which is what makes it safe to print and hand out at scale: it can only ever be redeemed once.

When a customer scans a code, they land on a simple page for that product, verify their email with a one-time code (or are recognized instantly if they've already got a Puraskar account with any merchant), and the points land in their wallet immediately. If the code has already been used, they're told so plainly instead of being silently rewarded twice — the claim is locked at the database level the instant the first scan completes, so two people scanning the same sticker at the same moment can never both get credited.

Where it works best

  • Packaged retail products. A sticker under a cap, inside a box, or on a tag — the classic FMCG "scan to win" mechanic, but tied to your own loyalty ledger instead of a one-off contest.
  • In-store signage. A code at checkout or on a table tent lets walk-in customers join your program without a staff member manually adding them.
  • Print and packaging runs. Because codes are generated in batches ahead of time, they can go straight into a print run for a new product line or seasonal packaging.

Why a unique code per unit matters

A single shared QR code for a whole product line is easy to screenshot and pass around, which turns a loyalty perk into an easily-farmed exploit. Generating one code per physical unit means the reward is tied to an actual purchase or pickup, not to a code anyone could find online and reuse indefinitely.
